The Farafra Oasis :

Farafra Oasis

The most isolated and least populous of the New Valley oases, Farafra is an extremely peaceful place to visit. Its mainly Bedouin inhabitants are well known for their strong traditions and religious piety.

FarafraOasis It’s one of the mysteries of Egypt that must be discovered for its characteristic limestone, of indescribable beauty, a territory full of dunes and white sand. The erosion has been filing roughness in the rocks, causing this way some natural sculptures worthy of the best of the artists.

The Farafra Oasis has always been a meeting point for camel caravans that dare to cross the western and central desert of Egypt. It is located more or less halfway between the important oases of Dakhla and Bahariya and has always been considered the territory of the Bedouin tribes, the majority community, at present, of all the Farafra Depression.

Farafra is an excellent example. This oasis, located in the western part of the country and considered the smallest in the area, is specifically located in the Lebanese desert, between the oases of Bahariya and Dakhla.

Its only organized settlement, Qasr Al Farafra, is a relaxing and very peaceful place, installed on the banks of the water mirror that is part of the oasis that gives its name. The tourist infrastructure in this place is scarce, but it has been developing as visitors from Egypt discover this corner of paradise that is hidden in the country

Farafra is the smallest and least populated oasis in the Egypt desert, 185 km from Bahariya and 300 km from Dakhla. The road can sometimes be covered with shifting dunes. Unlike the other oases, Farafra is not located in the center of depression but spreads out far from the Saharan plateau, on an isolated plain surrounded by sand.

The largest settlement, Al-Farafra, is built like the other oasis towns around a ruined fortress, where villagers would shelter from attacks. Though the traditional mudbrick, painted houses remain,  concrete developments have sprung up due to government efforts to attract outsiders to the area.

Al-Farafra’s Town Museum displays sculptures of oasis life by a well-known local artist, Badr.

Farafra is an ideal base for exploring the White Desert, 41 km (25 miles) from Al-Farafra on the road to Bahariya. Named after its bright-white rock formations, the White Desert resembles a haunting lunar landscape.
